Why is your blog called The Seventeenth Line?
This blog started out as a way to keep a record of reading with my former bookclub, The Seventeenth Line. Members of the bookclub met on the number 17 bus and decided to name our bookclub after the bus. You can read more about the origin of The Seventeenth Line on the About page.
What can I expect to read in your blog?
I’ll share short, personal posts related to reading, everything from book reviews, to list of favorite characters, to things I’ve learned from reading. I’ll also share personal experiences, but everything will relate back to reading.
How are your blog posts organized?
Posts are organized in the following 6 categories:
- Authors and Writers
- Book Review
- Library Love Letters
- Goals and Intentions
- Reflections on Reading
- Thoughts on Writing
What type of books do you read?
I read both fiction and non-fiction. I most enjoy literary fiction, science fiction and historical fiction. On the nonfiction front I like memoirs and travel writing. I have a soft spot for books set in Panama, Paris, Portland and New York.
How do you rate the books you review?
If you’re a reader you know rating books is an art, not a science. Plus, sometimes how you feel about a book changes over time.
That said, to track my response to a book I use a 5 star system. When rating a book I think about my initial reaction to the book, the writing, the characters and the overall story. More than anything, I consider if I’ve learned, felt or experienced something new as a result of reading the book.
π Don’t Bother: Poor writing, ridiculous storyline, offensive, inaccurate or otherwise bad (rare)
π π Fine: Predictable, clichΓ©, simplistic, or even foolish
π π π Satisfying: Engaging, more comfortable than innovative (most common)
π π ππ Enjoyable: Memorable, insightful, worthwhile, interesting, creative
π π πππ Meaningful: Captivating, unique, intense, offered something new (rare)
Where do you get your books?
I’m a big advocate of public libraries and I borrow books from the library as often as possible.
When I buy books I shop at Powell’s Books, my local independent bookstore. I like buying books from local spots when I’m on vacation. I especially love to pick up books from museum gift shops.
Sometimes I find books at Goodwill (or even at goodwillbooks.com) and I’m not above picking up books at yard sales.
Plus, my family and friends know books are always a great gift!
