When I first started The Seventeenth Line for my bookclub back in 2008 blogging still felt pretty new and I had no idea how to organize things. Categories, tags, posts, pages – who cared what all that meant! I just wanted a space for my bookclub to keep track of what we read and what we thought about what we read.
Needless to say, when I came back to this blog in 2020 it was a mess!
In relaunching The Seventeenth Line I’ve been more deliberate in the way I set it up. Actually, I love organizing so taking time to think this through has been a rewarding activity during a difficult year.
Which leads me to one of the reasons why I decided to relaunch The Seventeenth Line.
In 2020, when we were all spending so much time at home, I wanted something to focus on. I was having a hard time concentrating on reading, which was almost painful for me, and I liked the idea of having a reading related project.
The Seventeenth Line had been dormant since my bookclub came to an end and it seemed the perfect time to revisit this site. I asked myself what’s the purpose of The Seventeenth Line and I spent a good amount of time thinking about my reasons for starting this blog.

I relaunched The Seventeenth Line to help me to stay an active, thoughtful reader, to become a better writer, and to connect with readers around the world.
There were 3 things that came up for me.
Reading is important to me and I wanted to reignite my passion for reading.
Writing has always been a part of my work, but my writing is very technical and regulatory, I wanted to build my writing skills.
Most importantly, I wanted to connect with others! I wanted to talk about books. I wanted to hear what others were reading. I wanted to learn about other people and places. After months of being at home I just wanted to connect with other people.
Great, so I had my why figured out.
Now, on to the what, how and who.
